I fancy the idea of setting up my boat so I could row it to safety should the dodgy outboard stop (no wind etc.).
Has anyone tried this? Any tips on how to fasten the rowlocks please.
What about sculling, is that why there is a little hook on top of the rudder?
Thanks

Re: Rowing a IF
It should be possible to row an IF with proper gear. Take a look at this website: http://www.solopublications.com/sailario.htm. It shows rowing gear on a Pearson Ariel, which is similar to an IF. Another source for rowing of a small full keel boat is the Pardey's book, "The Self Sufficient Sailor." I tried to row my IF with a home-made paddle fixed to the end of the spinnaker pole and an improvised rowlock; with a great deal of effort, I managed to move the boat a few meters in flat water. I concluded that, to row the boat, you would need proper rowlocks (probably set 1.5 meters above the deck) and oars. I imagine that sculling would be harder than rowing, as it would take more skill.

Re: Rowing a IF
I know that IF-sailors sometimes use a scull oar. It is superior if you go singelhanded and needs only a single oar and a lock at the back beside the rudder. The lock does not need to be in the centre line.
