Rig tensions North Trimguide

Inlägg av NED1417 »

Hi all,
On the trimguide from NorthSails they recommend 37 for the uppers and 20 for the lowers on the Loos Gauge mod B
But on the list in 5mm there is no 37 and when you put the uppers on 37 the shrouds are very very tight.
So I have found my way of doing my own thoughts but it is annoying that it looks thr trimguide is wrong or I use not the right stuff.
For now I get no answer fron North so wondering what sailors use for numbers or tensionmeters

The number 37 in the trimming guide refers to a 6 mm upper shroud, which is factory standard for most of the rigs for the IF-boats. Still the tension numbers in the trimming guide is somewhat too high in my opinion.

It would be more suitable and enough to use 15 % of breaking load for a 5 mm upper shroud which corresponds to about 300 kg. The lowers are then adjusted to get a proper tension on the forestay (forestay tension somewhat in the region of 18-20 on a Loos B tension meter).
I myself use about 12-13 % of the breaking load for my 6 mm upper shrouds.

Okay, that makes sense to me.
I have the minimum size, uppers 5mm and lowers 4mm, that`s why I get so different readings from my Loos Gauge
I have indeed 19 on the forestay right now so that`s okay.
In another life, I sailed a J24 and always use the North guide as a good reference
It must not be so hard for NorthSails to communicate this to the users
Thanks a lot

In fact I use to adjust my uppers to 30 - 32 , which gives somewhat 320 - 380 kgs tension.
To apply this tension on a 5 mm shroud, adjust to 23 -25 which gives somewhat 310 - 370 kgs tension.

For very light weather conditions I sometimes adjust down to 28 to get 16 - 17 on the forestay.

Thinner stays will get the rig more elastic för the same tension.
Do never adjust a stay to more than 25 % of the breaking load. It means not more than 28 on a Loos PT-2 meter for a 5 mm shroud.

Please keep in mind that my readings are from the Loos PT-2( the professional model), as yours are from the Loos B type 2. The readings differ slightly for the same load, but you may probably find conversion tables by googling over the Internet. I found this which may be to your help: >> https://loosnaples.com/how-to-use-pt-se ... ion-gauges
